Pegouts

Pegouts / Service Protection Reports (Sydney Water)

What Is a Pegout (Service Protection Report)?

A Pegout, also known as a Service Protection Report, is a specialised survey and documentation of existing Sydney Water assets (such as sewer mains, stormwater lines, watermains) on or near your site. It accurately maps their location, depth, alignment, and structural context. This mapping is critical when planning construction, renovation, or excavation projects to ensure your works don’t damage public assets and comply with Sydney Water regulations.

The report identifies whether your proposed works fall within the Zone of Influence (ZOI) of any Sydney Water asset. If so, special protection measures or design adjustments may be required.

Why Do You Need a Pegout

Why Do You Need a Pegout?

You may be required to commission a Pegout in any of the following scenarios:

  • Your project is near, above or adjacent to a Sydney Water sewer, watermain, or stormwater main.
  • You plan to excavate, install footing slabs, retaining walls, driveways or paving near infrastructure.
  • You’re constructing swimming pools, decks, sheds, granny flats or significant landscaping works.
  • You’re preparing plans for Section 73 approvals, DA (Development Application), or building permits, and Sydney Water requires verification of asset locations.
  • Your design or building plans may need to avoid or protect public assets or easements.

Without a properly conducted Pegout, your building approval may be delayed or rejected, or you risk damaging infrastructure and incurring costly repairs.

What Our Pegout Service Includes

  3. Marking on-site – pegging or marking asset alignment, offsets, and invert levels.
  4. Depth and structural information – measuring depth, pipe type, gradient, strata type (e.g., rock, clay, fill), and adjacent assets.
  5. Report preparation – detailed, professionally formatted documentation suitable for submission to council, Sydney Water, certifiers, or certifying authorities.
  6. Advice & design input – recommendations if special protection is required (e.g., concrete encasement, distance buffers, structural measures).
  7. Coordination – liaising with Sydney Water, Water Servicing Coordinators (WSCs), or other stakeholders if needed.

Our team ensures accuracy, compliance, and clarity so your project proceeds without surprises.

Our Process (Step-by-Step)

Step What Happens Why It Matters
1. Request & Site Info You send site address, lot & DP, plans, scope of works Helps us evaluate complexity and plan resources
2. Document Review We study any existing asset diagrams or past reports Reduces guesswork and improves accuracy
3. On-site Locating Technician visits property to locate pipes/assets Confirms actual position vs mapped data
4. Measurements & Marking Depth, offsets, alignment and strata recorded Essential for design safety and compliance
5. Report Drafting Collate all data, include diagrams, notes, disclaimers Provides the formal record for approvals
6. Delivery & Support We deliver the report + answer your queries Helps you integrate findings into project plans
The exact steps may vary slightly depending on site conditions, complexity, and whether additional services (e.g. CCTV, deep excavation) are required.

Cost & Timeframe

Cost

The fee for a Pegout depends on several variables, including:

  • Site accessibility and terrain
  • Size of the property / lot area
  • Complexity or depth of nearby infrastructure
  • Need for advanced locating methods (CCTV, drilling, etc.)
  • Additional coordination or approvals with Sydney Water

Timeframe

Typical turnaround for delivering the pegout report is within a few business days after site attendance, depending on complexity. In urgent cases, expedited or “platinum” services are possible (i.e. same-day or 6-hour delivery) by prior arrangement.

We always aim to minimise delays to your approval process.
